How to Keep Skin Looking Younger for Longer: The Miracle Anti-Ageing Product You’re Already Using
As we age, our skin begins to change, particularly on our face and hands, where it’s most noticeable. Age spots, wrinkles, discolouration and more: We’re all too aware of our skin as we get older, and we’re bombarded by advertising for ‘miracle anti-ageing creams’ and various other products to help keep us looking younger for longer.
But what if there was an affordable, proven, anti-ageing product sitting right under our noses?
The anti-wrinkle cream you’re already using
We’ve all been warned by doctors for years about the effects of sun exposure on our skin. In fact, thanks to widespread sun safety campaigns around the world, most of us are already protecting ourselves against the most harmful effects of the sun, such as melanoma and other skin cancers.
New studies have finally provided proof of what beauty editors and dermatologists have known for decades: Sunscreen can help you to look younger for longer.
Anti-ageing sunscreen: Look 24% younger, according to new study
Anti-ageing sunscreen? You read that right.
A recent study, published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, saw 903 adults under the age of 55 randomly selected and organised into trial groups. Half of the participants were instructed to use sunscreen daily on their hands, neck, arms and faces, while the other half were instructed to use sunscreen on a discretionary basis (or, as they saw fit). Also included in the trial was the use of a beta carotene - the use of which has been widely promoted for anti-ageing - as well as a placebo component.
Photoaging tests of the participants’ hands were taken before, during and after the completion of the 4.5-year study. The results were astounding:
“Skin aging from baseline to the end of the trial was 24% less in the daily sunscreen group than in the discretionary sunscreen group,” according to the study’s abstract.
"Regular sunscreen use retards skin aging in healthy, middle-aged men and women."
In fact, the daily sunscreen users saw no detectable increase in skin ageing. Now, if that’s not motivation to make sunscreen a part of your everyday routine, we don’t know what is! What’s more, there was no detectable benefit derived from the use of the beta carotene among the participants.
The good news: This tells us that if you want to keep your skin looking younger for longer you need only make sunscreen a part of your everyday routine. Not only is sunscreen now scientifically proven to keep you looking great, it’s an incredibly cost-effective addition to your daily skincare regime. This one product could replace all the creams, supplements and serums you’ve been spending a fortune on for years – and it’s already there in your beach bag!
The best news: It’s never too late
Dermatologists and beauty specialists will of course tell you that it’s never too early to start taking care of your skin by using sunscreen. However, what we found really interesting about this study is that the average age of the participants was 39. That means it’s never too late to get started on your anti-ageing routine.
We all want to simplify our skincare routines, not simply add more products to the list, right? The great news is that you don’t need a separate sunscreen for face, hands, neck and body.
