What is SPF?
With so many different sunscreens on the market, it can be hard to know which one to choose. One of the most confusing factors for many people when deciding on a sunscreen product is SPF or ‘sun protection factor’.
You’ll find sunscreen products and even makeups and moisturisers with SPF ratings of anywhere between 15 and 50 and higher (and we outline the value, or not, of SPFs above 50 further in the Blog). So, what do these figures mean? Here, we uncover the difference between sun protection factor ratings and help you to understand what they mean for you.
Sun Protection Factor
SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’ and indicates the level of protection from the sun’s harmful UVB rays that a product offers. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn when you’ve spent too long in the sun.
|Vanilla Green-Tea||Fragrance-Free||Mango||Fragrance-Free Kids|
|For Face & Body||✓||✓||✓||✓||✓|
|Water & Sweat resistant||80 min||80 min||80 min||80 min||80 min|
|Sizes available||4oz &1oz||4oz &1oz||4oz &1oz||4oz & 1oz||4oz & 1oz|
When it comes to the difference between SPF levels, SPF 30 and SPF 50 for example, this comes down to the percentage of the sun’s UVB rays that the product can block. A product with an SPF level of 15 will block around 93% of the sun’s UVB rays. You will often find SPF 15 in makeup and skin care products. However, in sunscreens, the industry standard is generally SPF 30 and above.
A sunscreen with SPF 30 will protect you from around 96.7% of UVB rays, whereas an SPF of 50 means protection from about 98% of UVB rays.Anything beyond SPF 50 makes very little difference in terms of risk of sun damage, and no sunscreens offer 100% protection from UVB rays.
But what about UVA rays?
Of course, UVB rays aren’t the only thing you need to worry about when heading out in the sun. UVA rays are those which can cause wrinkling, premature ageing and skin damage. Whilst the SPF level of your sunscreen determines the level of protection you’ll receive from UVB rays, UVA protection is indicated by the term ‘broad protection’.
Protecting your skin from both UVA and UVB rays is important for skin safety and for preventing damage and premature aging, so it’s important to choose a sunscreen which not only has an SPF of at least 30 but is also a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
What’s the best sunscreen?
At the end of the day, the best sunscreen is the one you love to wear.
After all, if putting on sunscreen becomes a chore, or you’re finding your sunscreen irritating, you’re unlikely to use it effectively, and it won’t be providing you with adequate protection. Our best advice to you is to find a sunscreen that you love and that suits your needs, apply it properly, and use it whenever you head outdoors.
