Sunscreen or Insect Repellent First? The Correct Application Order

KINeSYS Sunscreen and Bug Spray

Do you apply sunscreen or bug spray first?

Embracing the outdoors this summer? Whether you're hiking, camping, or just lounging at the park, don’t forget your dynamic duo for outdoor protection: sunscreen and bug spray.

But here’s the thing—the order you apply them matters more than you might think. If you’ve ever wondered whether to apply sunscreen or insect repellent first, you’re not alone. Let’s break it down.

☀️ Step 1: Apply Sunscreen First

Always start with sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside. This allows it to absorb properly and form a protective barrier against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

💡 Tip: Don’t forget often-missed spots like the tops of your ears, back of your neck, and the tops of your feet.

Once your sunscreen is on and settled, it's time to tackle those pesky bugs.

🦟 Step 2: Apply Bug Spray After Sunscreen

Once your sunscreen has had time to settle, it’s time for insect repellent. Spray it onto the exposed areas of skin—over your sunscreen, not before. Avoid spraying directly on your face. Instead, spray into your hands and gently apply it to your face, steering clear of your eyes and mouth.

Always follow the instructions on your insect repellent label for safe and effective use.

❓ Why Does the Order Matter?

Applying sunscreen before bug spray helps both products work as intended:

  • Sunscreen protects against sunburn and long-term sun damage.

  • Bug spray repels mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects.

If you reverse the order, the sunscreen may not fully absorb—or worse, you may inadvertently reduce the effectiveness of both products.

And remember: FDA recommends applying these separately—never as a combined product. That’s because sunscreen needs frequent reapplication, while insect repellent doesn’t.

🔁 Reapplying: What You Need to Know

With your KINeSYS Sunscreen, reapply:

  • Every 2 hours, or

  • Every 80 minutes if swimming or sweating.

Bug spray should be reapplied only as directed on the product label—typically less frequently than sunscreen.

Now go ahead—get outside and enjoy your summer safely!
